Joseph experiences had silence, hopeless communication, where he could have no converse, no commerce, with his parents, neighbours, friends. He was overlooked and was becoming a nonperson in his household. He deprived of the opportunity to be exposed to sign language.

Charlotte parents decided to learn a signed language, knowing that she would not be able to pick up the spoken word easily. And several of their friends and family did it as well. They started using Signed Exact English and moved to use American sign language.
