What are the positive and negative aspects of viewing ecosystem services based on their value/worth to humans?. Earth & Marine Sciences
A positive aspect of viewing ecosystem services based on their value to humans is that it gives people a framework to understand abstract concepts such as the gas regulation services. People may not understand cellular respiration but knowing that air pollution causes respiratory issues in humans and how much that costs a healthcare system helps people understand why pollution levels might be regulated. A negative aspect of this is that it puts a monetary value on ideas that are intangible; these monetary values may imply that one is more important than the other and one should be valued over the other, even though they are largely interconnected.
