Are the benthics and limnetics separate species, subspecies of a single species, or different morphotypes of a single species? (Hint: what is the definition of a species?. Earth & Marine Sciences
We will briefly discuss and conclude that the benthics & limnetics are capable of interbreeding and of producing viable, fertile offspring. They represent a single species. Their ‘geographical’ ranges overlap, because they are found in the same lake and breed side by side in the benthic region. They are not subspecies, but simply different morphotypes of the same species.
