On this tree, the oldest nodes are at the bottom, so the branching event occurred earlier at those nodes than at nodes further up the tree. So the lizard lineage branched off earlier than the bird lineage, but that doesn’t mean that within these taxonomic groupings, all lizards are older than all birds.
