The caste system is the division of Indian society based on occupation—and it's hereditary. It started as a way to understand the organization of society (introduced in the sacred literature), but soon became a tool of discrimination, exploitation, oppression, and mistreatment. Modern Hinduism no longer condones it or tolerates it, and neither does the secular state of India.
